An NGO, though it has no internationally recognised definition, is generally an organisation that operates independently from any government, though they may receive funding from but without oversight or representation from a government. NGOs are usually set up by ordinary citizens and may be funded by governments, foundations, businesses and ordinary people.
According to the University of London, the history of NGOs date back to 1839. However the modern "non-government organisation" as we know it today only came about with the establishment of the United Nations in 1945. NGOs have grown at a phenomenal rate, especially in the last two decades.
Today, there are more than 40,000 NGOs that operate internationally, and millions more at the national level, for example World Vision Australia and Médecins Sans Frontières.
NGOs perform many duties, such as: community health promotion and education, education and public safety, managing emerging health crises, community social problems, environmental, economic, development, disaster relief, and women's issues.
NGOs have many advantages over government organisations. Due to their lack of political affiliation, NGOs are able to reach and aid areas that government organisations cannot. Also, with no ties and allegiance to governmental wants, NGOs are able to accurately and directly aid communities in the ways it is really needed.
