Australia has many aid organisations that operate at an national or international level. These organisations may be either governmental or non-governmental.
Aid is money and resources that are given or lent to poor or developing nations. The giving and receiving of aid creates links between countries.
Australia gives aid to many countries world wide. Australia provides assistance to Africa, the Middle East, Latin
America, the Caribbean, but focuses on the Asia-Pacific region which is home to two-thirds of the world's poor but only receives less than one third of global aid. Australia's top recipients of aid are Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, both part of the Asia-Pacific region.
In turn, Australia also receives aid in emergencies like natural disasters.
Australia's government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), as well as Australian-based NGOs, contribute to Australia's aid link.
Whilst aid is a good thing, it is accompanied by many problems. These problems are often equity issues. These issues, may, for example, be whether money is going to the poorest people, corruption, or the focus of aid.
